For snowboarders, the most important thing is "snow quality," right? But no matter how good the snow quality is, that alone won't attract people.

This time, I'd like to introduce a selection of popular ski resorts that are all located in heavy snowfall areas, with snow depths exceeding 3 meters during peak season, making them favorites among snowboarders.

What I look for in Hokkaido is definitely "powder snow" and "a lot of snow"! (That's important, right?) If I'm going to go all the way there, I want to go somewhere with lots of snow♪

As someone who has been hooked on snowboarding since my youth, I'd like to introduce five of the most satisfying snowboarding areas in Hokkaido that I've actually visited!

1. Heavy snowfall areas of Hokkaido

Please pay attention to the red circles on the map. Hokkaido's heavy snowfall areas are concentrated in the southern part of the prefecture, centered around Niseko (the narrowest part of the terrain).
hokkaido-snow-board-choice-mapJapan has always been known as one of the world's leading heavy snowfall regions.

Snow is formed when seawater evaporates and is carried up to the mountains by the wind.
The Sea of Japan has abundant moisture, and cold westerly winds from the continent carry that moisture. As a mountainous country, Japan has all the conditions to turn that moisture into snow.

2. Introducing 5 of the most popular ski resorts for snowboarders!

Rusutsu Resort

Hokkaido Snowboarding Rusutsu Resort

This was the key point when choosing!

- It is extremely popular, attracting 700,000 visitors annually, making it one of the most popular attractions in Hokkaido.
- It also offers excellent resort amenities (hotel facilities, activities, etc.).
- The variety of courses and the wide course widths are good points.
The sheer scale of the resort, with 37 courses across three mountains and a total skiable distance of 42 kilometers, is sure to ignite your desire to ski. (It's also popular with beginners because you can ski freely on the wide slopes.)
• The "Super East Course" is especially recommended and is a huge hit. (It was very popular according to customer reviews.)
- The off-piste section with a maximum slope of 40 degrees is incredibly appealing. (It's a challenging course that will make you want to try it. Since it's a southeast-facing slope, it's best to go early in the morning on a sunny day.)

Rusutsu Resort is a ski resort that has all the features that snowboarders look for, and it's also a great place for families with children who don't often get to go skiing, as it offers excellent facilities for relaxation. It's a ski resort that we recommend to everyone!

Niseko area

Niseko Hirafu

This was the key point when choosing!

Niseko consists of four resorts: Hanazono, Hirafu, Niseko Village, and Annupuri, allowing you to choose your preferred location.
- It is said to be the largest ski resort in Hokkaido.
Hirafu alone attracts 500,000 visitors annually, and the high number of repeat visitors indicates its immense popularity.
- It's so vast that you'll feel like you haven't skied enough, no matter how many days you stay.
- Niseko Grand Hirafu's Dynamic Course → Silver Dream boasts a maximum run of 5.6 kilometers, allowing for enjoyable long cruising runs.
- Its large size makes it ideal for beginners to practice.
Niseko
Niseko is the perfect ski resort for beginners and those who have moved beyond the beginner level but are struggling to improve their skills.
The wide courses and excellent snow quality mean that falls don't hurt much, and you're less likely to bump into other people. These are simple things, but crucial for improvement. It's a wonderful ski resort where you can experience the feeling of gliding effortlessly, almost like skiing on clouds!

Sapporo International Ski Area

Sapporo International Ski Area

This was the key point when choosing!

・Excellent accessibility! It's easily accessible, about 60 minutes from Sapporo and about 40 minutes from Otaru.
Compared to Rusutsu and Niseko, it has fewer courses and lifts, but the variety is great, so you can enjoy yourself to the fullest.
- A relatively high percentage of sunny days.
- The big kicker in the park, which could be called a signature feature of Sapporo International, is popular among mogul skiers.

With easy access from Sapporo, this ski resort is extremely popular with people who want to enjoy snowboarding, sightseeing, and dining.
With its seven different slopes, the resort offers plenty of variety, including a downhill course with a maximum gradient of 30 degrees that will delight mogul skiers, as well as jumps like tabletops, so you'll never get bored.

Daisetsuzan Asahidake Ropeway

Asahidake

This was the key point when choosing!

It boasts the best snow quality in Japan, making it a sacred place that every intermediate and advanced snowboarder dreams of visiting.
It's not a resort, so it's very popular with snowboarders who know that the way to enjoy it is different from a typical ski resort. (For example, those who are used to skiing on ungroomed slopes, especially on steep slopes where their knees are buried more than halfway in the snow.)
Asahidake
There are only four courses: A, B, C, and D. Courses A and D are for advanced skiers, and courses B and C are for intermediate skiers. So it's a slope exclusively for intermediate to advanced skiers, but for enthusiasts, it's a slope that leaves nothing to be desired.

However, it can be a challenging slope if you don't understand the dangers of skiing off-piste, so in that sense, it might be more suitable for intermediate to advanced skiers.

Since it's a west-facing slope, it's naturally a cold area, so be sure to dress warmly. However, if the weather is good, it can be a fantastic day.

Kiroro Resort

Kiroro Resort

This was the key point when choosing!

Its easy accessibility is a major draw, as it's only 60 minutes from Sapporo and 40 minutes from Otaru.
- You can enjoy long-distance cruising with a maximum run distance of 4km.
• There are plenty of activities available.
- It's a family-friendly kids' park where even young children can have plenty of fun.

Kiroro ResortWith a packed schedule of events, including live concerts and powder snow championships, this ski resort offers plenty to enjoy beyond the slopes, making it a very popular choice for dates.

In particular, "Niisa no Kane," located at an altitude of 1180m within the ski slopes and known as a lovers' sanctuary, attracts many couples who come to deepen their relationship amidst a world of pure white snow. And of course, the snow quality is superb!

Final thoughts

Niseko SnowboardingSnowboarding is an activity that takes you against the backdrop of nature. We can only play on snow, which is created by nature, when counting each individual crystal falls and accumulates. While nature gives us so much fun, if we don't follow the rules, nature can also take lives.

To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, the manners of each individual snowboarder are crucial.

The main reason why these five selections are so popular is probably that you can enjoy them to your heart's content without having to break any rules (I'm sure our readers will be fine).

Enjoy skiing and having fun on the slopes in Hokkaido, where the best snow and ski resorts await you.
