1. Basic information about Farm Tomita

Farm Tomita is located just a short distance from the town center of Nakafurano. It is accessible in about 50 minutes by car from Asahikawa city center (Asahikawa Airport) and in about 2 hours and 10 minutes via the Doto Expressway from Chitose city center (New Chitose Airport).

Generally, the flower fields are in bloom from late April to early October, and the park closes for the winter season from mid-November.

Incidentally, admission to Farm Tomita and parking are completely free. It's impressive that even after becoming a tourist farm with outstanding recognition in Japan, attracting 100 million visitors every year, they continue to maintain the farm's original style of management.

The parking lot can accommodate several hundred cars, but traffic jams can form on weekends, holidays, and during long holiday periods. It is recommended to go as early in the morning as possible.

2. Best time to visit and how to enjoy Farm Tomita

Visiting all 13 flower fields will take about 1.5 to 2 hours. If you plan to have a meal, allow an additional 30 minutes to an hour.

There are also two standard courses available: a spring-to-autumn course and a summer course, so you might want to change the itinerary depending on the season.

Here, we'll give you a digest of what it's like each season.

2-1. End of April to May

Farm Tomita is usually open during Golden Week every year.
Although it's not yet the peak blooming season for lavender, colorful flower seedlings have been planted, and we can already see glimpses of a carpet of flowers.

2-2. Mid-June to mid-July

It's the peak season for lavender. I recommend exploring the western section of the farm. There are two main highlights there.

First up is the "Traditional Lavender Fields," the birthplace of Furano's lavender heritage. The entire slope is covered in a vibrant expanse of glossy purple flowers. The contrast with the coniferous trees and blue sky creates a magnificent, quintessential Hokkaido scene.

And another highlight is the "Field of Colors," where seven-colored flowers adorn the hillside. Looking down from the top of the hill, you'll be captivated by the rainbow-colored carpet that looks like a painting.

During the peak lavender season, "Lavender East," a flower field specializing in lavender, opens for a limited time of about one month (scheduled from June 29th (Sat) to late July in 2024). It's about 6 kilometers from Farm Tomita, about a 7-minute drive. Soft serve ice cream and other items exclusive to Lavender East are also sold there.

2-3. Late July to late September

With the lavender season over, various flowers reach their peak from summer to autumn, creating a season of intense color. The vivid contrast between the summer sky and the flower petals is magnificent. A representative highlight is the "Autumn Colors Field" located in the northeast of the farm. The flower field, like a rainbow carpet, is breathtakingly beautiful as far as the eye can see.

As July gives way to September, the marigolds and begonias become more vibrant in color.

As summer ends and we move towards autumn and winter, you're sure to be energized by the sight of flowers blooming with all their might.

2-4.10. October - Closed

In Furano, you can gradually feel the signs of autumn after the Obon festival, and by October, a calm autumn sky spreads across the landscape.
By the latter half of October, the Tokachi Mountain Range is covered in snow, and the flower fields are nearing the end of their blooming season.
The park will be closed for the winter season starting around the second week of November.

3. Gourmet food and sweets you can enjoy at Farm Tomita

Besides enjoying the flowers, Farm Tomita's charm also lies in the fact that you can enjoy food and sweets there.

Farm Tomita has 14 buildings, and you can enjoy soft serve ice cream and light snacks at 6 of them, and full meals at 3 of them.

While the cafe offers many casual menu items, what's surprising is that you can also enjoy authentic dishes supervised by Makoto Saida, the owner-chef of Valore, a renowned restaurant in Biei that has consistently received Michelin stars.

Among the recommendations is the "Kamifurano-grown Overwintered May Queen Potato Gratin and Curry Set (1,340 yen including tax)." The gratin, made with May Queen potatoes that have been overwintered at low temperatures to bring out their sweetness, is exquisite, baked with fresh cream and mozzarella cheese. It pairs perfectly with the rich, somewhat nostalgic curry!

Another collaborative drink menu item is "Colorful Field," a lavender jelly and strawberry juice. Its beautiful appearance truly represents Farm Tomita's flower fields. The sweet and sour strawberries and fragrant lavender blend together refreshingly.

The soft-serve ice cream comes in flavors unique to Furano, such as lavender, vanilla, and melon, and there's a wide variety of snacks available, including cheesecake, croquettes, and melon bread, so it's fun to enjoy a snack while strolling around.

4. Souvenirs from Farm Tomita

Farm Tomita produces many products that utilize the properties of lavender. When choosing souvenirs, having an educational perspective will make your shopping experience even more enjoyable.

For example, at the "Perfume House" located in front of the traditional lavender fields, you can observe up close the process of how original soaps are made and how perfumes are created by blending lavender essential oils in-house.

5. The Blue Pond and the Green Marsh – Recommended Places to Visit

Finally, I'd like to introduce some recommended spots to visit along with Farm Tomita.

First, a representative spot is the "Blue Pond" in Biei. You'll definitely want to visit this classic Hokkaido tourist spot. It's about 25 kilometers from Farm Tomita, about a 30-minute drive.

The milky blue water is so captivating, and the dead larch trees stand there. The landscape, where beauty and melancholy coexist, is truly fantastical, and I could gaze at it forever.

On the other hand, one hidden gem that has been gradually gaining recognition recently is Torinuma Park. In a corner of the park, which retains its natural landscape, stands a pond that shines with vibrant life.

When there isn't a single wave, it's like gazing at a sea of ​​green jewels. Its somewhat fairytale-like atmosphere is making it increasingly popular as a location for wedding photography.

It's a quiet place, so it's also recommended for a short break during your travels.

Farm Tomita is a scenic spot that Furano is proud of. From summer to autumn, you can admire magnificent flower fields that are well worth visiting even from far away.
