Hokkaido is known among motorcyclists as a "holy land for touring" because of its beautiful scenery wherever you go, wide roads, and few traffic lights.

Every year, many riders travel to Hokkaido seeking unique experiences that can only be found here, such as roads stretching to the horizon and dynamic landscapes unlike anything else in Japan.

In particular, Furano, famous for the TV drama "From the North Country," and Biei, known as the "town of hills" next to it, are treasure troves of Hokkaido's representative scenery and are very popular areas for motorcyclists.

In the Furano and Biei area, I'll introduce seven recommended touring spots that I can confidently say you'll regret not visiting!

1: Farm Tomita, a representative tourist spot in Furano.

If you're looking for a quintessential summer sight in Furano, it's lavender.

The fragrant lavender fields, adorned with beautiful purple hues, soothe the weary rider's journey.
One place that boasts immense popularity for its lavender is Farm Tomita, a spot so popular that when people think of Furano, they often think of Farm Tomita.

To get to Farm Tomita, simply follow the signs along National Route 237, which runs through Furano, and you'll arrive without getting lost.

Furthermore, once you enter the premises, staff will guide your motorcycle to the parking area, so you can rest assured (free of charge).

The park is planted with not only lavender but also various other kinds of flowers, and just gazing at the colorful flower fields created by nature is incredibly soothing.

Furthermore, Farm Tomita's attractions include a variety of lavender-flavored sweets such as lavender soft serve ice cream and lavender milk pudding. With multiple cafes on the premises, it's a recommended spot for riders with a sweet tooth.

The best time to see the lavender is from early to mid-July.

2: Panorama Road Ebana, a scenic road stretching towards the Tokachi Mountain Range.

If you turn off National Route 237, which runs through Furano, onto Prefectural Route 581 in Kamifurano Town, you'll see a small sign that says "Panorama Road Ehana." Turn left there, and you'll arrive at this scenic road.

The seemingly endless straight road stretching for approximately 5km is a spot that has been selected as one of the "Eight Scenic Views of Kamifurano," and you can drive your car along this quintessential Hokkaido road that leads towards the Tokachi Mountain Range.

This road will make you want to step on the gas, but let's drive slowly and enjoy the peaceful scenery of fields stretching out on both sides.

3: Winding roads and the awe-inspiring view of Mt. Tokachi at "Tokachi-dake Observation Deck"

If you take Prefectural Road 291 from the town of Kamifurano towards Tokachidake Onsen, you'll find yourself on a winding road perfect for riders who are tired of Hokkaido's straight roads and long for curves.

The road that stretches towards Mount Tokachi becomes Prefectural Road 966 along the way, and eventually leads to "Tokachi-dake Bogakudai," the trailhead for Mount Tokachi.

The Bogakudai viewpoint, where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the majestic Tokachi-dake mountain right before your eyes, is a refreshing addition to the generally laid-back Furano area.

"Roller Coaster Road" is a town road called "Nishi 11-sen" located west of the Miyama Pass on National Route 237, on the way from Kamifurano towards Biei.

To access the location, look for the sign that says "Nishi 11-sen Noumen Noudo" (West 11th Line Agricultural Road) along National Route 237.

This 2.5km-long road, with its moderate ups and downs, is truly like a rollercoaster, offering a thrilling experience when riding a motorcycle along it.

The roller coaster track is a straight road with good visibility, but there are intersections along the way, so be sure not to go too fast.

5: Enjoy the hilly town of Biei: "Patchwork Road"

The "Patchwork Road" is a representative landscape of Biei, a town of rolling hills, where beautiful rolling hills stretch on and on, reminiscent of Europe.

The easiest way to access Patchwork Road is to take National Route 237, which runs through the town of Biei, and look for the large sign there.

The Patchwork Road is dotted with numerous sights, including Mild Seven Hill, which was used as a filming location for a cigarette commercial; Ken and Mary Tree, which was used in a Nissan car commercial; and the "Parent and Child Trees," a row of oak trees that look like a parent and child.

It's easy to get distracted by the beautiful scenery around you, but be sure to pay close attention to avoiding distracted driving, as there are many tourists traveling by car, motorcycle, and even bicycle.

Also, there are small parking lots scattered along the Patchwork Road, so if you have time, parking your motorcycle and exploring on foot is another option.

There are many stylish cafes in Biei, but among them, there is one located in the patchwork hills.
"Aruuno Pine" is a cafe recommended for motorcyclists.

The owner is a former Honda mechanic, and he can even help with minor motorcycle troubles while traveling in the garage on the premises (inquire for details).

Hokkaido is Japan's number one camping kingdom, with numerous wonderful campsites scattered throughout the region, but among them, "Hinode Park Auto Campground" is particularly popular with motorcyclists.

Hinode Park Auto Campground is a high-quality campground located in Kamifurano, boasting top-class specifications in Hokkaido in terms of site size, completeness and cleanliness of facilities, and excellent location.

With convenience stores and hot spring facilities nearby, and easy access to Mount Tokachi, this location is excellent, and during the summer season, many motorcyclists pitch their tents here and enjoy camping life in Hokkaido.

Furthermore, a lavender field stretches out from the observation deck behind the campsite, making it a campsite that makes you want to stay for multiple nights rather than just one.
