A secluded inn nestled in the vast natural beauty of Hokkaido. While staying in popular tourist destinations is fine, exploring slightly more off-the-beaten-path locations can lead to unexpectedly memorable and unforgettable lodging experiences.

This time, I'd like to introduce "Kanayama Lake Log Hotel Larch" in Minami Furano, a place I'll never forget. A space overflowing with the warmth of wood, the finest cuisine and hospitality, and a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with Hokkaido's unique nature awaited me.

Full of charm in every season. Kanayama Lake, Minami Furano.

Log Hotel Larch

Kanayama Lake Log Hotel Larch is located on the shores of Lake Kanayama in Minami-Furano. It can be accessed in about 1 hour and 10 minutes from Chitose-Higashi via the Doto Expressway, or about 40 minutes after exiting at Shimukappu IC.

While Lake Kanayama may not be very well-known to people from outside Hokkaido, it's a place with attractions throughout the seasons, such as lavender fields and camping in the summer, and smelt fishing in the winter.

Larch wood used for the town. An authentic log hotel on the shores of Lake Kanayama.

Log Hotel Larch
The area around Lake Kanayama has been developed with campgrounds, a resort and training center, and a forest park, and is also used as a resort. The "Kanayama Lake Log Hotel Larch" is the central accommodation facility. Its most distinctive feature is that the hotel is constructed using larch wood from Hokkaido.
Log Hotel Larch
Originally, larch wood had no use other than for railway sleepers and the like. However, there was an abundance of larch wood, and it seemed a waste not to use it. So, they wondered if there was a way to use it to revitalize the town, and that's how the idea of building a hotel out of larch wood was born.
Log Hotel Larch
From the hotel's exterior to the lobby, restaurant, and corridors, larch wood is used extensively. While the main building's foundation includes some concrete sections, it's surprising to learn that the cottages are constructed entirely of larch wood.

A unique and unparalleled warmth. Maisonette Western-style twin room.

Log Hotel Larch
You can choose from all nine rooms in the main building (accommodating 3 or 5 people) or all nine cottages (accommodating 5 or 9 people). This time, I stayed in a twin Western-style room in the main building. It was the most standard and reasonably priced room, but I was impressed by its quality as soon as I entered! It was surprisingly spacious and had a maisonette design.
Log Hotel Larch
The floors and walls are all made of larch wood. The luxurious use of logs creates the feeling of being in a log cabin. Heating is provided by steam supplied through pipes. The room, enveloped in a gentle warmth and the scent of wood, is a relaxing and comforting space.
Log Hotel Larch
The second floor features two luxuriously placed double beds. From the window, you can see the snow-capped mountains around Lake Kanayama, a reminder that you are surrounded by the magnificent nature of Hokkaido. The first floor has a spacious unit bathroom, and the living space is furnished with a massage chair and sofa, allowing you to enjoy a relaxing time doing nothing.

It's just like an auberge. Savor an exquisite full-course Western meal.

Log Hotel Larch
In addition to its excellent facilities, a major attraction of Kanayama Lake Log Hotel Larch is its full-course Western-style meals featuring seasonal ingredients. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to call it an auberge—a hotel where the food is the main attraction—as a splendid array of delicious dishes are served.
Log Hotel Larch
Among their offerings, the specialty "Seafood Pie" is absolutely exquisite. As you break apart the pastry, you enjoy the flavorful soup infused with the deliciousness of the seafood, along with the generous portions of shrimp and scallops. Leaving some of the crispy parts intact allows you to savor the rich flavor of the butter, while soaking it completely lets the delicious seafood flavors beautifully infuse into the pastry.
Log Hotel Larch
The main dish is "Grilled Tokachi Wagyu Beef Loin with Aromatic Vegetable Sauce." Although it's located near Lake Kanayama, close to Furano, it's also close to the Tokachi Plain. Tokachi Wagyu beef, with its firm lean meat and juicy, high-quality fat, pairs perfectly with the simple sweetness of local vegetables.

In addition to the delicious food, the staff's attentive service also warmed my heart.

Hoarfrost sparkling in the morning sun. A terrace reflecting the changing seasons of Hokkaido.

Log Hotel Larch
The next morning, after a restful sleep in a warm room, I stepped out onto the terrace and was fortunate enough to witness the moment the sun rose. The surrounding area is a larch forest, and what I saw there was rime ice, a phenomenon where moisture in the air freezes and adheres to the trees.
Log Hotel Larch
I will never forget the sight of the frost-covered trees sparkling like jewels in the sunlight. As time passed, spotlights shone on animal footprints in the snow, and the shadows stretching across the snowy canvas transformed the scene. For a brief moment, I was able to experience the awe-inspiring beauty of Hokkaido's nature.
Log Hotel Larch
Enjoying a cup of coffee while taking in such scenery is a moment of pure bliss. Especially on a chilly morning in the mountainous region of Hokkaido, the warm, bitter taste of the coffee soothes the throat.

The luxury of simply spacing out. Enjoying breakfast while watching birds.

Log Hotel Larch
Breakfast at Kanayama Lake Log Hotel Larch is a Western-style menu. On this particular day, it mainly consisted of scrambled eggs and sausages. With three kinds of bread, salad, corn soup, and pumpkin, it was a delicious meal that reminded me of a comforting home-cooked breakfast, and it made me feel warm and fuzzy inside.
Log Hotel Larch
While enjoying such a breakfast, you can also enjoy birdwatching. Many wild birds, such as jays and woodpeckers, come to the bird feeder placed outside the restaurant, seeking the bread. There's something special about just relaxing and watching the birds flying around energetically.

While Lake Kanayama is bustling with people enjoying outdoor activities like camping and BBQs in the summer, the real charm of winter here is being able to listen to the sounds of nature and spend time relaxing.

Surrounded by the natural beauty of Hokkaido, Kanayama Lake Log Hotel Larch offers a truly enjoyable experience from check-in to check-out. This warm and inviting resort hotel is highly recommended for couples and families looking to relax and enjoy quality time together.
