1. First, head to Hakodate Tsutaya Bookstore!

Exterior view of Tsutaya Bookstore

Hakodate's Tsutaya Bookstore, despite being called a "bookstore," offers a wide variety of goods beyond just books. Hakodate is the second Tsutaya Bookstore to offer this lifestyle-oriented concept, integrating books, a cafe, a shop, etc., following the one in Daikanyama, Tokyo.

The facility is designed with adults in mind, with careful attention paid to lighting and interior design to create a relaxing atmosphere. However, it also includes a children's play area and a cafe, making it a multi-purpose complex where people of all ages can relax.

Tsutaya Bookstore, which is the only one of its kind in Hokkaido, is often a popular destination for tourists visiting Hakodate.

Front of Kaldi

There are two entrances to the store. If you enter through the north entrance, you'll find Kaldi immediately on your left.

They sell domestic ingredients that you don't usually see in supermarkets, as well as alcoholic beverages and snacks from all over the world, so it's fun to make new discoveries.

The store's displays change to match seasonal events, so it's a place that makes you feel excited no matter when you visit.

Bread section

As you enter the store and proceed to the back, you'll see a poster introducing the bakery and listing the sales dates. On a wooden shelf, you'll find baskets and cards indicating the start time of sales.

The bread sold here is mainly hard-crusted bread for meals, and it pairs well with Kaldi's carefully selected cheeses, prosciutto, and nuts, making it very convenient to shop for them all together.

The bread sold at Kaldi is available from Monday through Friday afternoons. The bread from these four stores is so popular that it reportedly sells out within a few hours.

You're probably curious about the atmosphere of these popular shops and what other products they offer, right? So, let's take a look at the atmosphere of each shop!

If you're driving around the Hakodate-Onuma area, you should definitely stop by "Oba Bakery." As you drive through the forest while enjoying views of Mount Komagatake in Onuma Quasi-National Park, you'll see it on your right.

The ground covered with wood chips, along with the chairs and tables, looks very stylish. You can also enjoy delicious bread while gazing at Mount Komagatake. The scenery will surely make it taste even better!

Upon entering the store, you'll find hard breads, cookies, and other baked goods carefully displayed.

This shop is renowned for its fragrant country bread, baked in a wood-fired oven using organic wheat from Hokkaido. Made using a method that doesn't involve yeast, with only flour, water, and salt, the bread is popular for its chewy texture and deep, rich flavor.

It's a shop located in a forest on the outskirts of town, but there were always cars parked there.

While Kaldi primarily sells hard-crusted breads, this shop also offers a wide variety of sweet breads. "Konahiki Goya," easily recognizable by its country-style yellow walls, is a popular bakery in Nanae Town.

Local customers reportedly line up in front of the store an hour before it opens to buy their favorite bread.

This restaurant actively uses local ingredients, making it a safe and reliable place that embodies a love for the local community.

Upon entering the store, you'll find a selection of sweet Danish pastries right in front of you, while the back of the store features a variety of hard-crusted breads.

They sell not only bread, but also Hokkaido wines and grains, making it a very appealing shop where you might end up buying too much!

4. Hokuto City "coing"

Coin exterior

The quince, a fruit that is a specialty of Hokuto City, is called "coing" in French. This shop, "coing," which uses the local specialty as its name, is located in a residential area of Hokuto City.

It's about an 8-minute drive from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station, a stop on the Hokkaido Shinkansen line which opened in 2016. It's also a great place to stop by if you're renting a car!

Coin interior

The exterior has a lovely atmosphere, but the interior is also a wonderfully cozy space. The word "simple" perfectly describes it, and the bread on display allows you to really taste the flavor of the ingredients.

Coin's bread, which pairs well with both coffee and wine, is highly recommended as a gift for adult parties and other occasions.

5. Hakodate City "Tombolo"

Tombolo exterior

This shop is popular in Hakodate for its delicious hard bread. The shop, "tombolo," is located in the western district, where many of Hakodate's tourist attractions such as Mount Hakodate and churches are concentrated.

Walking along Daisanzaka, a slope in this area often used for calendar and poster shoots, you'll come across a retro building with yellow walls. Doesn't its charming exterior make you want to take a picture?

Tombolo interior

The shop, which is a bakery, perfectly fits the word "retro," but it also displays pottery, giving it a unique atmosphere.

Our most popular items are fig and walnut bread and country bread. We highly recommend our hard-crusted breads made with only homemade natural yeast, Hokkaido-grown wheat, salt, and water. Why not stop by while taking a stroll through the western district?
