1. Chinese Chicken Burger (Lucky Pierrot, Hakodate City)

Lucky Pierrot is a must-visit for anyone in Hakodate. Its daily popularity stems from its strong support from both tourists and locals.
The menu is so extensive that you'll have trouble deciding what to choose, and the portions are so large that one person can't possibly finish it all.

With its consistently delicious flavors and reasonable prices, this restaurant is full of appealing features that make it impossible for it not to become popular.

Among them, the Chinese Chicken Burger is the most popular item at every location. It consists of large pieces of fried chicken coated in a sweet and spicy sauce and served on a bun.

The tender and juicy fried chicken combined with the sauce is an exquisite combination. It's so addictive that you'll want to come back for more, even if you want to try other items on the menu. There's plenty of it, so it's very filling.

This hamburger is 1.5 times bigger than a regular one, and the crisp lettuce adds a nice touch, making it easy to finish in no time. What sets it apart from ordinary hamburger shops is its wide variety of menu items, including set meals, spaghetti, pizza, and omelets. With 16 locations in the Hakodate area, it's a place you'll want to visit again and again.

2. Betsukai Jumbo Scallop Burger (Betsukai Town)

Located in eastern Hokkaido, Betsukai Town is a livestock farming town where the number of cows exceeds the number of people (approximately 16,000 people versus approximately 110,000 cows!).

While a wide range of animals, from dairy cows to beef cattle, are raised here, the area also boasts an abundance of seafood, including the famously sweet Hokkaido shrimp, surf clams, salmon, and scallops—a truly extensive list.

The Jumbo Scallop Burger uses large scallops, at least L2 size. It's a super B-grade burger that consistently ranks high in local burger contests.

Betsukai Jumbo Scallop Burger

Large, firm scallops are wrapped in spring roll wrappers and served with a bun and a separate sauce. You don't assemble it from the start; you create your own preferred flavor. The scallops are tender and springy, and combined with the crispy coating and three different sauces, this substantial dish goes down surprisingly easily.

Along with Jumbo Milk, it's become the number one most popular new specialty for travelers in Eastern Hokkaido. Please give it a try!

3. Shiraoi Sanmai Burger (Nanakamado, Shiraoi Town)

Shiraoi is known as Hokkaido's premier producer of Wagyu beef. Its taste is also considered the best in the prefecture. The Wagyu beef, carefully raised by conscientious farmers, is gaining nationwide recognition. The Shiraoi Burger is a hamburger made with this meat. More than 30 varieties of Shiraoi Burgers are sold at shops in the city.

The variety of fillings is also extensive, ranging from simple hamburger patties to beef bowl style sandwiches, grilled meat sandwiches, minced meat cutlets, and even steak.

Among them, the new addition to the Shiraoi Burger lineup, scheduled to debut on November 20th, is the Shiraoi Zanmai Burger. It's a proud creation from the manufacturer, Nanakamado.

Shiraoi is a treasure trove of ingredients, not only its Wagyu beef but also its Kojōhama spicy mentaiko (pollock roe), and its shiitake mushrooms, which are among the top in Japan in terms of production volume. We've combined these two ingredients into a croquette and paired it with Shiraoi Wagyu beef pate.

The rich flavor is supported by buns made with Yumechikara and Haruyutaka wheat flour from Tokachi, Hokkaido. It's a perfect collaboration with no reason not to be delicious. With Shiraoi Wagyu beef, Kojohama mentaiko (spicy cod roe), and shiitake mushrooms, this three-in-one attack is sure to knock you out.

4. Reverse Burger (Maruyama Shokudo, Yuni Town)

A hamburger is a patty sandwiched between buns. But Maruyama Shokudo in Yuni Town defies that convention with their reverse burger.

Since the surface is wrapped in rice paper, you don't have to worry about getting your hands dirty. The thick slices of onion are full of sweetness, and the bun absorbs the rich juices of the hamburger patty, delivering a delicious flavor to your tongue. Both the bun and the two slices of onion perfectly complement the richness of the hamburger patty.

This product, with its unique flavor and distinctive presence, is a huge hit at the annual Autumn Festival held in Odori Park. It is also regularly sold in Sapporo. The shop is located in Yuni Town, a rich rural area, situated in the heart of Hokkaido's agricultural region, alongside Yubari, Iwamizawa, Kuriyama, and Naganuma.

Located close to both Sapporo and Chitose, about an hour away. We hope you'll enjoy the hot springs and the flower-filled garden.

5. Scallop Burger (Hokushou Suisan, Tokoro Town)

Hokushō Suisan's scallop burger, which makes full use of the abundant marine resources of the Sea of Okhotsk, is gradually gaining popularity through word of mouth among motorcyclists riding around Hokkaido.

Two or three large fried scallops are piled high. A generous amount of tartar sauce and a sweet bun are served on top. The batter is crispy because they are fried to order, and the inside is piping hot. The delicious flavor of the scallops, which have stored up the finest sweetness in their flesh, spreads throughout your mouth.

Being larger than the regular size, it's quite substantial. Even an adult man might find it difficult to eat two.

It's reassuring to know that it's still delicious even when cold, so you don't have to worry about leaving any behind. Many tourists buy two or three at a time, probably because of this sense of security. If you're going to Monbetsu or Abashiri to see the drift ice, this is a must-try local delicacy during your drive. Highly recommended.

6. Ezo Deer Burger (Teshikaga Town, Michi-no-Eki Kussharo Lake)

Ezo deer are a common sight in Hokkaido. Some of you may have encountered them during a drive, staring intently at you from the side of the road with their clear eyes. However, these cute deer are a nuisance to farmers and forests, and are frequently culled.

The meat produced during this process is used in various ways, but the most familiar example is the Ezo deer burger.

Some people might be concerned about the taste or smell of wild game, but you don't need to worry about that with the Ezo deer burger at Michi-no-Eki Mashu Onsen. The meat is properly processed and minced. There is absolutely no unpleasant smell.

On the other hand, the meat, primarily lean Ezo deer meat, is bursting with flavor. Deer meat is said to be low in fat and high in iron, and in Hokkaido, it's considered a warming meat, making it particularly appealing to women. Its nutritional value is too good to be just a conversation starter. Open the door to another dimension of local burgers.

7. Atka mackerel fry burger (Shiretoko Rausu Roadside Station, Rausu Town)

When it comes to Atka mackerel, dried fish is the way to go. It's delicious when it's butterflied and has plenty of fat on it.

However, for Hokkaido residents, it's a fish that's sold raw, and it's often served fried in school lunches. It has a mild flavor, is tender, and has no unpleasant aftertaste. It also possesses the deliciousness of high-quality white fish.

And this locally caught mackerel is deep-fried until crispy, topped with classic tartar sauce, and served on a bun – that's the mackerel fry burger at Michi-no-Eki Shiretoko Rausu.

This is actually a hidden gem. It's a simple dish, a mackerel version of a fish burger, but its simplicity allows the quality of the ingredients to directly translate into deliciousness. And that means using fresh, locally caught fish. The restaurant itself specializes in seafood dishes such as kaisendon (seafood rice bowl) and hamodon (pike conger rice bowl), so they have a reputation for handling and preparing fish. Combined with its reasonable price, it's a very popular item.

Enjoy the refined flavor that you wouldn't expect from a B-grade product. It will change the way you view Atka mackerel.

Final thoughts

So, what did you think? Actually, there are many more local burgers that I couldn't introduce here. For example, the burger made with pheasant meat from Iwamizawa, or the Monbetsu Burger Trio, and many more. In vast Hokkaido, each region has its own unique local specialties.

This time we've featured seven representative examples, but you're sure to find local burgers depending on your travel destination. Find your own favorite local burger!
