As you all know, there are many varieties of cherry blossoms, and each one is equally beautiful.
Cherry blossoms, which can be considered a symbol of Japan, are something that many people look forward to seeing every year.
Among them, the "moss phlox" that blooms on the ground is a type of cherry blossom that can create colorful patterns in red, pink, white, and other colors.
It's like stepping into the world of art, isn't it?
So, this time, we've compiled a list of spots in Hokkaido where you can see moss phlox in bloom.
I'd like to introduce two must-see classic spots and two new spots that show signs of becoming popular, so I hope you'll read to the end!
*Please note that the best time to see the moss phlox varies from year to year.

1. Shibazakura Takinoue Park [Takinoue Town]

Shibazakura Takinoue Park is located in Takinoue Town.
It all started with just a boxful of saplings, but thanks to the efforts of the townspeople and residents, it has now become one of Japan's leading tourist attractions.

When it comes to seeing moss phlox in Hokkaido, this park is probably the first one that comes to mind.
The reason she's so famous isn't simply because she's "beautiful"...

First, across a hill covering approximately 10 square meters, magnificent moss phlox blooms vibrantly every year.
(To give you some idea of its size, it's about seven times the size of Koshien Stadium.)

And in this place, which boasts an overwhelming sense of scale unique to Hokkaido, you can take a leisurely stroll along the park paths.
You can spend a wonderful time surrounded by a field of flowers!
*The best time to see them is usually from mid-May to early June.
Another reason for its popularity is that it has swept numerous awards.
In 18, it was selected for the "Grand Prize for Creating Flower-Related Tourist Destinations," and it is beloved both within and outside Hokkaido.

Also, the "Shibazakura Festival" is held here, and from the day after the blooming declaration, food stalls appear and you can even experience a scenic helicopter tour!
Visiting while it's bustling with activity is a fun, festive experience, so if you have the time, why not go and check it out?

2. Higashimokoto Shibazakura Park [Ozora Town]
Higashimokoto Shibazakura Park in Ozora Town is not just a place where moss phlox is planted.
If you look very closely...

That's right, a major feature is that pictures are drawn in various places using moss phlox!

This park boasts a vast expanse of moss phlox, almost the same size as the one in Takinoue Town mentioned earlier (10 square meters), and you can enjoy strolling along the walking paths♪
Typically, the best time to see them is from mid-May to early June.
As you may know, these moss phlox plants are not growing wild.
I'd like to briefly touch upon the circumstances surrounding this.

It all began shortly after the war when a farmer who loved flowers planted a handful of plants in his garden.
I created a mini moss phlox park in my garden, which caught the attention of the Mokotoyama Onsen Management Corporation, and they began working on the park.
In fact, 70% of this mountain is cleared by that one person, and because of the steep slope, machinery cannot be used, so it is all done by hand.
It took eight years to plant them.
Finally, it seems the moss phlox plants were a gift from the farmer's sister.
It was thanks to the hard work behind the scenes that they were able to bloom so beautifully.
Just knowing the reason why moss phlox blooms here makes you appreciate the flowers even more, doesn't it?
Furthermore, the moss phlox at Higashimokoto Park is truly beautiful, as it is blooming without a single gap across the entire hillside thanks to the meticulous care and management of the plants.
The beauty of flowers blooming on hills is that they look stunning whether you look up or down!

This park also hosts the "Shibazakura Festival," one of Hokkaido's most representative spring events!
To ensure children can also enjoy themselves, go-karts, a fishing pond, and a sightseeing train will be available.
There are also facilities such as the "Shibazakura no Yu" hot spring and footbaths, so why not relax and soothe your tired muscles after your stroll?
Don't miss the illuminations during the event!

3. Taiyo-no-Oka Engaru Park [Engaru Town]

Engaru Park in Engaru Town is famous for its cosmos flowers in autumn, but in recent years, it has also been attracting many visitors who come to see the moss phlox, making it a new and noteworthy spot for moss phlox in Hokkaido.

The biggest attraction is that you can enjoy a variety of flowers, including moss phlox, all at the same time.
For example, while moss phlox typically blooms from mid-May to early June, Ezo mountain cherry blossoms and Ezo purple azaleas bloom in mid-May.
And from late May to early June, you can see things like black boats and rhododendrons!
With tulips and other flowers in bloom, this is a place where you can fully enjoy the feeling of spring.

And when spring ends, the June flower, the peony, blooms, followed by the German iris, and then the cosmos, passing the baton to the park, making it a park where flowers never cease to bloom.
Flower lovers will absolutely adore this!

Apparently, this park is also planning events such as viewing parties during the moss phlox season!
More details will be announced soon, so please be sure to check it out!

4. Moss phlox at the Mishima family's garden [Kutchan Town]

The colorful moss phlox blooming at the foot of Mount Yotei is part of "Mishima's Moss Phlox Garden," a moss phlox spot that has become very popular in recent years.
This house in Kutchan Town is open to the public thanks to Mr. Mishima's generosity.
However, it was so incredibly beautiful that it eventually became a poster!!
The moss phlox at the Mishima family's estate comes into full bloom around the beginning of June each year, covering an entire 4,000 square meter property.
In recent years, it has become a hot topic, and many people now visit to catch a glimpse of its beauty.
It seems that this new spot in Kutchan, or rather Hokkaido, where you can see moss phlox, is expanding in scale.

At the spot named "Shibazakura Hill," moss phlox flowers spread out on both sides of a walkable path.
The mix of bright pink, red, and white is apparently inspired by the snow-capped Mount Yotei!
Furthermore, you can see a vast expanse of moss phlox on the opposite side of the large road, making it quite a sight to behold!
It will leave you feeling relaxed and at ease, wanting to stay leisurely forever.

It's easily accessible, just a 5-minute drive or a 15-minute walk from Kutchan Station, making it perfect for a stroll!
The contrast with the rapeseed field is also fantastic.

Surrounded by the sweet scent of moss phlox, you might discover things you wouldn't notice unless you were walking along the path!
*Walking is recommended!
Let's fully enjoy spring in Hokkaido!
*Please remember that this is a private garden, so be sure to follow proper etiquette while sightseeing!
