Next, I'll introduce five slightly unusual, hidden hot springs. They may not appeal to everyone, but each one has an outstanding feature that makes it worthy of the name "hidden hot spring."

2-1. Asahidake Onsen Yukomanso

Points: Hidden hot springs with high overall scores

First, let me introduce you to Yukomanso, located in Asahidake Onsen, deep in the Daisetsuzan Mountains, beyond Biei.

This inn, with its charming mountain lodge-style building, boasts top-notch baths and hot spring water quality, making it a truly exceptional secluded hot spring retreat. I would honestly recommend it as my number one choice, but its proximity to the ropeway station and the presence of several other inns nearby might be a slight concern for hardcore "secluded hot spring" enthusiasts, which is why I've included it here. It's deep in the mountains, yet also on a scenic route, making it the perfect hot spring for those seeking a truly secluded experience.

2-2. Seiwa Onsen Ruonto

Highlights: A location befitting a secluded hot spring and delicious soba noodles.

Seiwa Onsen Ruonto is located in Horokanai town in northern Hokkaido. While the facility itself is a fairly ordinary day-trip hot spring, its location is extraordinary. It is situated in Horokanai town, which is the second least densely populated municipality in Japan and unofficially holds the record for the lowest temperature in Japan at -41.2℃. As you travel through forests and buckwheat fields (or through snowfields in winter) to reach it, you can't help but feel like you're in a secluded hot spring.

Horokanai Town is one of Japan's leading buckwheat-producing areas. Because of this, the soba noodles served at the restaurant attached to the hot springs are exceptional! The fragrant noodles and slightly sweet broth are incredibly delicious.

2-3. Makari Village Hot Spring Resort Center

Highlight: An open-air bath with a beautiful view of Mount Yotei.

This is Makari Onsen, located in Makari Village, next to Niseko in central Hokkaido.

This is another unremarkable day-trip hot spring facility, but the view from the open-air bath is magnificent. Mount Yotei, also known as Ezo Fuji, is a beautiful mountain that, as its name suggests, closely resembles Mount Fuji, and this hot spring boasts an open-air bath from which you can gaze directly at Mount Yotei.

2-4. Yachigashira Onsen

Highlight: A hidden hot spring with exceptional water quality located in a residential area.

This is Yachigashira Onsen, located in Hakodate City in southern Hokkaido. It's affectionately known as "Yachispa" by some locals. As it's the last stop on the tram line, it should be a hot spring that tourists often see, but it's a hot spring that doesn't attract many tourists.

First of all, the hot spring is located in the middle of a residential area, so it lacks atmosphere. The hot spring itself looks like a day-trip public bath from the outside, and the inside is like an old-fashioned public bath, so you might not feel like going there while traveling.

However, this hot spring boasts a distinctly cloudy, reddish-brown water, indicating its high quality. With operating hours from 6 AM to 10 PM and a convenient location just a 5-minute walk from the tram stop, it's perfect for tourists to enjoy a relaxing soak early in the morning or late at night. Why not experience a slightly more off-the-beaten-path hot spring?

By the way, please be aware that the "high temperature" bath in the indoor bath is really hot.

2-5. Oboko-so, Yakumo Onsen, Hokkaido

Highlights: A secluded hot spring located along a river deep in the mountains.

The last of our five selections is Oboko-so, located in Yakumo Onsen in Yakumo Town, southern Hokkaido.

Located deep in the mountains and along a river, it has a similar atmosphere to the aforementioned Ginkon-yu, also in Yakumo town, but its location is quite different. This one features a larger open-air bath and is located even deeper in the mountains.

This secluded hot spring deep in the mountains boasts wonderful, high-quality reddish-brown water.
