Image of Lake UtunaiLocated not far from New Chitose Airport is Lake Utonai, famous as a sanctuary for migratory birds.

Although it's technically within Tomakomai City, it lies on the final approach of aircraft to Chitose Airport, so many people have probably seen it from an airplane.

Also, since it's a waterfowl sanctuary with a rich natural environment, you might feel that there's something unapproachable about it, right?

That's not true. On the contrary, it's being developed as a spot where people can easily observe the natural environment.

This time, we'll introduce the charms of Lake Utonai. Please visit this sanctuary for waterfowl, which can be enjoyed regardless of the season.

1. What is Lake Utunai?

Image of Lake UtunaiLake Utunai is a lake that collects many rivers.

The inflow of rivers enriches the soil with nutrients, creating a suitable breeding ground for waterfowl and migratory birds.

It has long been known as a stopover point where numerous migratory birds rest their wings before setting off on their journeys.

In 1991, it was designated as Japan's first bird sanctuary and also became Japan's fourth site registered under the Ramsar Convention.

250 different species of birds visit annually. Whether they know they are protected or not, these birds once again surrender themselves to the calm surface of the water, swaying gently. Perhaps because humans do not harm them, some birds do not even try to fly away when approached quite closely.

A harmonious environment where birds and people coexist unfolds right next to the roadside station.

Image of Lake UtunaiIf you park your car at the roadside station and walk along the promenade behind it for about three minutes, you'll come across the Lake Utonai Wildlife Protection Center, enveloped in the warmth of wood. The interior is spacious with many open spaces and is equipped with binoculars and telescopes, making it possible to observe the elegant wild birds on Lake Utonai even in rain or snow.

The walking trails you can take from here are filled with the sounds of sunlight filtering through the forest trees and rustling leaves in the wind, allowing you to fully experience nature.

At the Nature Center, you can enjoy birdwatching once again from the observation room overlooking Lake Utonai. While other locations are at eye level with Lake Utonai, this observation room is high enough to look down on the lake below.

2. The Four Seasons of Lake Utunai

2-1. Autumn

Image of Lake UtunaiAs September arrives, flocks of greater white-fronted geese, signaling the arrival of autumn, fly to Utonai. Furthermore, large numbers of bean geese and other birds arrive in massive flocks. In addition, many other migratory birds arrive throughout the winter.

Whooper swans and other species overwinter here. Tundra swans rest their wings and then fly further south.

The resting period varies depending on the year and the weather. However, the sight of large flocks taking flight all at once is simply spectacular.

2-2. Winter

Image of Lake UtunaiUtunai freezes over except for a small section where the river flows in, leaving only a tiny bit of water visible above the surface. The creatures that overwinter here huddle together in that small patch of water, waiting for spring.

The birds you'll mainly spot are the Whooper Swans and Northern Pintails. The Great Spotted Woodpecker, which is active all year round, slows down a bit in winter. With its head tilted, it quietly awaits the arrival of spring.

2-3. Spring

Image of Lake UtunaiAnd as spring approaches, it is during this period, from winter to spring, that Utunai truly shines as a stopover point for migratory birds.

Greater White-fronted Geese and Bean Geese form flocks of tens of thousands of birds and reserve Utunai as a temporary home. They travel back and forth between the feeding grounds and the lake, gaining nourishment and recovering their strength.

In Honshu, the Japanese bush warbler, a bird of spring, doesn't begin singing until April. All wild birds begin their joyous songs as spring arrives. At the same time, it marks the beginning of the season for mating and raising offspring.

2-4. Summer

Image of Lake UtunaiBlessed with abundant nature, Utunai is also a treasure trove of insects. For birds that primarily feed on insects, it's a joyous season. But at the same time, it's also the beginning of preparations for the harsh winter.

The number of wild birds, including what appear to be Oriental Turtle Doves, White Wagtails, and Siberian Rubythroats, is increasing at an accelerating rate. Grey Herons and Mute Swans can also be spotted.

White-tailed eagles are more commonly seen in winter than in summer.

3. Things to be careful of at Lake Utunai

Image of Lake UtunaiLake Utunai already has a perfectly established ecosystem. Any actions that would disrupt it are strictly prohibited.

First, avoid feeding wild birds. Feeding them can cause them stomach problems. Conversely, if only one species of bird increases in number, it can disrupt the delicate balance of the ecosystem.

As there are many insects, long sleeves are absolutely necessary. The walking paths have fairly soft soil, so high heels would be difficult to wear.

The distance from the Lake Utonai Wildlife Conservation Center to the Nature Center is approximately 1.5 km. There is no place to take shelter along the way if it starts raining. It would be wise to bring rain gear to be prepared for unexpected emergencies.

Finally, wild birds may carry the avian influenza virus. They may also have parasites, so do not touch the carcasses. Also, to avoid spreading the virus to other areas, be sure to disinfect the soles of your shoes before leaving Lake Utunai. For example, if your next planned destination is a farm for agricultural experiences, touching the carcasses could cause significant harm to the chickens and other animals there.

4. About Utonai Lake Roadside Station

Image of Lake UtunaiUtonai Roadside Station is a facility where various events are held throughout the year.

Because it's the closest roadside station to Tomakomai Port, where ferries from Sapporo dock, many people buy various local specialties and bento boxes before boarding the ferry.

As you might expect, Tomakomai is famous for its surf clams, and there are plenty of surf clam dishes on the menu. Among them, the one you should definitely try is Hokki Tama.

To put it simply, it's like takoyaki (octopus balls) but with sashimi-grade surf clams instead, and then slowly grilled until golden brown in Hokkaido butter.

A characteristic of the surf clam is that its sweetness, umami, and broth increase dramatically when heated. When this blends with the smooth, wheat-based broth, it's simply delicious.

Image of Lake UtunaiClam and crab pressed sushi are perfect for taking on the ferry or as a packed lunch. The food menu is also extensive, including soba noodle and pork bowl set menus, and the owner's recommended crab omelet bowl.

Another local specialty, haskap berry jam and sweets, are available for purchase at the antenna shop and direct sales outlets. You'll also find the lake view from the large windows incredibly soothing. You simply can't miss this place!

5. Access to Lake Utonai (Roadside Station Utonai Lake)

・Approximately 20 minutes by car from New Chitose Airport
Approximately 20 minutes by car from Tomakomai Station
Approximately 60 minutes by car from Sapporo city center (using the expressway)
Parking: 93 spaces for regular cars, free of charge

Summary

Despite some limitations, Lake Utunai remains an easily accessible spot to enjoy nature. Its location, close to both the ferry terminal and the airport, is quite unique and not something you'd easily find elsewhere.

Lake Utonai is an oasis for migratory birds, and at the same time, an oasis for the soul for humans. It is the perfect watering hole for refreshing the mind. It is a prime, close-up environment for learning that humans are a part of nature.

At Lake Utunai, you can experience the wildness not just by looking at it, but by truly feeling it with your whole body.
