Ice Cream Parlor Misono Image

The first floor is a hair salon, and you'll find the shop up a narrow staircase.
Founded in 1919 (Taisho 8), "Ice Cream Parlor Misono" is a well-known, long-established coffee shop.

The shop is located on Miyako-dori, a shopping street in the bustling downtown area of Otaru City, Hokkaido, and is only about a 5-minute walk from JR Otaru Station, making it easily accessible.
Furthermore, it is also known as the first shop in Hokkaido to manufacture ice cream.

This time, I'd like to step into a shop that exudes the historical charm and romantic atmosphere of the Taisho era.

1. Carefully crafted ice cream

Homemade ice cream

This is Misono's proud homemade ice cream.
There are actually two types of ice cream at Misono.

One of them focuses on locally sourced ingredients such as milk from Akaigawa, iodine-enriched eggs, and acacia honey.
Another option is one with the same fat content (5-6 percent) as the gelato popular in Italy.

The former melts in your mouth and leaves a refreshing aftertaste.
The latter, on the other hand, has a soft texture thanks to the richness and creaminess of the egg.

For both, it's best to let them sit for a while and knead them before eating for a more delicious result.
Please try comparing the two types of ice cream.

2. The shop's most popular item is the pudding à la mode.

Pudding à la mode

On top are the shop's homemade pudding, cherries, mandarins, and whipped cream, while the bottom is packed with soft, creamy ice cream.

This pudding isn't the traditional runny type, but rather a slightly firmer, more elastic type, with a nostalgic, old-fashioned taste.

Incidentally, after taking a bite, I couldn't help but say, "Oh, it's delicious."
Therefore, it's a menu item that has many repeat customers.

3. We are particular about our melon soda ice cream as well.

Melon Soda

Ice cream floats atop a fizzy melon soda... Unlike the ice cream in the pudding à la mode we had earlier, this ice cream has a rich and creamy flavor.

It seems to be made to a consistency similar to soft-serve ice cream, so you could call it "retro ice cream."
They've maintained the same taste since the restaurant was founded. That's probably the secret to their continued success in gaining fans for 98 years since their inception.

In addition to pudding à la mode and melon soda, we also have a wide selection of other menu items, such as parfaits topped with plenty of whipped cream, so please try those as well.

4. We also offer takeout and nationwide shipping.

Takeaway ice cream

Now, regarding Misono Ice Cream Parlor, you can also get takeout and delivery.
There are two types of ice cream available: Otaru Canal Ice Cream, which has a refreshing milk flavor and aftertaste, and Taisho Roman Ice Cream, which is characterized by the richness and smoothness of eggs.

They also have monaka-type ice cream.
The outer layer is moist, and the ice cream inside has a soft texture.

These products are very popular not only with locals but also with tourists!

5. The interior has a retro and relaxing atmosphere.

Misono Store

Ice cream parlor Misono has maintained its unchanging taste since its founding. Their style of serving customers with their unique methods and flavors remains unchanged.
On the first floor of the building is a hair salon, and if you go up the narrow red carpeted staircase next to it, you'll find the shop.

Misono Store

The restaurant, with its 48 seats, is decorated with retro furniture and ornaments from the Taisho and Showa eras, making you feel as if you've traveled back in time. You can spend your time in a relaxed atmosphere.

The plush chairs are very comfortable, and you can enjoy the cozy atmosphere along with delicious desserts.

The sign for Misono exudes a sense of history and charm. Inside the shop, there were also many autographs from various famous celebrities and other people.
That just goes to show how famous the name Misono is throughout the country.

I wonder if many celebrities have also visited this place to compare different ice cream flavors?
Eating while letting your imagination run wild in that way might be a good idea.
