7. Access to Otaru

Finally, let me explain how to get to Otaru.

・Go by JR

The most popular way to get to Otaru is by JR train. From New Chitose Airport, take the "Rapid Airport" train and you'll arrive at Otaru Station in about 80 minutes. From Sapporo, it takes about half that time, around 40 minutes. There are no transfers from New Chitose Airport, so it's very convenient.

If you're sightseeing in Otaru on foot, consider using JR Minami-Otaru Station, which is close to the Sakaimachi area.

・Go by rental car

Also, if you want to visit various tourist spots besides Otaru, or if you want to enjoy Otaru's famous places outside the city center, renting a car is recommended.
If you're going directly from New Chitose Airport, it takes approximately one hour (about 80 kilometers) using the expressway. Since the expressway ends at Otaru once you get on at the Chitose Interchange, you won't get lost, so it's a safe and easy route.
~The following are estimated travel times from various tourist spots to Otaru (by car)~
From Sapporo: Approximately 40 minutes From Jozankei Onsen: Approximately 40 minutes
- From Niseko: Approximately 100 minutes - From Lake Toya: Approximately 2 hours
From Asahikawa: Approximately 2 hours From Hakodate: Approximately 5 hours
