4. Clothing and water temperature to consider when rafting

Hokkaido rafting, whitewater

The rafting season in Hokkaido runs from April to October, but unlike on Honshu, you need to take precautions against the cold when rafting in Hokkaido.

From April to June and September to October, you will be wearing a drysuit, so it is recommended to wear a jersey, fleece, or highly insulating base layer. Even with a drysuit, water can still enter through the neck and wrists, so it is advisable to wear clothing that can get wet or quick-drying clothing.

From April to June, the water temperature is around 5 degrees Celsius, and it's so cold that even just getting wet from the splashes can cause you to lose body heat. April, in particular, is a time when the water temperature is especially low due to snowmelt, so you'll need to take precautions against the cold. On the other hand, the water level is high, so you can enjoy the thrill of the rapids.

Hokkaido Rafting
Even if the temperature is high, you can't stay in the water for a long time. Be careful not to jump into the river recklessly!
Even during the warmer months of July and August, the river water remains cold, with a maximum temperature of only about 20 degrees Celsius.
Even in summer, people mostly wear tracksuits or sweatpants.

Rafting trips typically last 1 to 2 hours or more. Since staying wet for that long can cause you to lose body heat, even in the summer, depending on the weather and temperature, you may be required to wear a dry suit, or conversely, a T-shirt and shorts. It's a good idea to ask the tour company about the appropriate attire closer to your trip date.
What to bring for rafting in Hokkaido

What to bring on the day of rafting
Towel: Use to wipe away splashes or other spills.
Change of clothes: You may get wet even if you wear a drysuit.
Useful items
Sunscreen: Even if the temperature isn't high, sun protection is still necessary!
Spare contact lenses: Just in case.
Drinks: Some tours provide drinks and snacks.
