What should you do in such a situation?
In emergencies, whether you "know" or "don't know" can make a huge difference in the outcome.
This time, I'll tell you what to do if your flight to Hokkaido is likely to be canceled.
Table of contents
1. The first place you should contact is "the place where you paid the money."
2. If you want to change your flight, contacting the airline is also an option.
2-1. If you are changing your flight, the airline is also valid.
2-2. Contact information for checking the flight status of each airline.
2-3. To check the service status
1. The first place you should contact is "the place where you paid the money."
Even though we simply call it "travel," there are countless ways to make arrangements. You can use comparison booking sites, buy directly from airlines like ANA, JAL, or Jetstar, or join a tour organized by a travel agency.
If your flight is likely to be canceled or postponed, the first place you should contact is, quite simply, "the place where you paid for your flight reservation and arrangements."
For example, let's say you book a flight through a travel agency and then ask the airline if you can cancel it.
The airline will probably process the cancellation, but they will likely tell you to check with the place of purchase to see if a refund is possible.
When booking online, it's common to hear people say, "I don't even know which airline I booked my flight with." Therefore, be sure to keep a record of emergency contact information in your booking confirmation email or any other documents sent to you, such as your ticket.
2. If you want to change your flight, contacting the airline is also an option.
2-1. If you are changing your flight, the airline is also valid.

If your flight is canceled just before your departure, you can change your flight or itinerary, or cancel everything and get a refund. However, if your return flight is likely to be canceled, you have no choice but to look for an alternative flight.
If you want to change your flight, the main factor is whether the airline will accept the change.
Similar to Chapter 1, where you would contact the place where you paid for your flight reservation and arrangements, it is also effective to contact the airline directly.
However, some airlines (mainly low-cost carriers) do not offer rebooking at all, so be sure to carefully check the terms and conditions when making your reservation.
*If we do not offer rebooking, you will need to cancel and receive a refund, and then book an alternative flight yourself.
A typical condition for rebooking is another flight with the same airline.
ANA and JAL have an agreement, so in very rare cases, you may be eligible for a replacement flight on routes with infrequent service or connecting flights, but this is extremely uncommon.
Transfer processing is mainly done by phone, but the best option is to go to the airport counter.
Airport counters offer the widest variety of alternative options.
In Hokkaido, buses and trains can stop running due to severe cold waves or heavy rain, so if you feel it's a bit risky, make arrangements to head to the airport while you can still move.
2-2. Contact information for checking the flight status of each airline.

2-3. To check the service status
When flight cancellations or suspensions occur on a large scale, inquiries become overwhelming, making it difficult to get through to airlines and travel agencies by phone or online.
If you want to check the service status, following each company's account on Twitter is the easiest way to gather information.
3. Self-judgment is not allowed.

Cancellation fee rates vary depending on the fare, booking class, and airline, but in most cases, a 100% cancellation fee applies if the flight is cancelled after takeoff.
For example, one travel agency's cancellation policy states that cancellations made before the flight departs incur a 50% cancellation fee, while cancellations made after the flight have departed incur a 100% fee.
This means that, for example, if the travel cost was ¥10,000, you would get a refund of ¥5,000 if you contacted them before the plane took off, but if you contacted them after the plane had already taken off, you wouldn't get a single yen back.
If you haven't received confirmation of the flight cancellation or haven't been able to contact the relevant authorities to cancel, please proceed as if you were going to travel (use the plane) as planned.
Don't make assumptions like, "At this rate the plane probably won't fly, so I'll just contact the ticket office to cancel when they open... zzz."
