What comes to mind when you think of public transportation in Sapporo?
Most people would probably think of the subway.
The Sapporo Municipal Subway, which connects JR Sapporo Station to Odori Park, Susukino, and Maruyama Park, is very convenient and is a popular mode of transportation for both tourists and residents.

On the other hand, the streetcar line is a route that even Sapporo residents rarely have the opportunity to ride, but it has been attracting attention since the streetcar line was made into a loop in December 2015.
What does "looping the streetcar line" mean? What changes will occur as a result of looping the line?
What kind of train is the Sapporo streetcar anyway?
This time, we'll answer those questions for you! Sapporo Streetcar(Streetcar heading from Ekimae-dori towards Susukino)

Basic information about the Sapporo streetcar

1. What is Sapporo's streetcar system? What will change with the loop line?

Sapporo's streetcar system is the northernmost streetcar system in Japan.
It all began about 100 years ago, in 1918 (Taisho 7), when it opened in conjunction with the major event, the "Hokkaido Grand Exposition."
After its opening, the number of routes was steadily increased, and at its peak, nine routes covered the entire central area of the city.

However, starting in 1964, the number of lines gradually decreased due to the spread of private cars and the opening of subway lines.
The remaining three lines then ran as a single continuous route until recently. The route was shaped like an inverted U. Sapporo Streetcar[Figure 1] Sapporo streetcar route map in 2011 (from Wikipedia)

Figure 1 shows the old streetcar route map. Notice that there was no connection between "Nishi-Yonchome" and "Susukino"!

In 24, Sapporo City formulated the "Streetcar Utilization Plan." This plan aims to make the streetcar system more user-friendly and create a more people-friendly and attractive city.
As part of this effort, the aim was to revitalize the area by connecting "Nishi 4-chome" and "Susukino" to create a loop (a circular line).

And this is what the route looked like after the loop was created.

Sapporo Streetcar[Figure 2] Route map after the loop line was completed (quoted from "Notice Regarding the Opening of the Loop Line for the City Tram")

By creating a loop line connecting "Nishi-Yonchome" and "Susukino" over a distance of 450m, it has become easier for local residents to use!

The streetcar lines run through a laid-back area with a slightly retro feel. A variety of streetcars operate here, including older trains with a Showa-era aesthetic, colorfully wrapped trains, and the latest "Polaris" model.

The loop takes about 50 minutes, and along the way, you'll pass by the foot of Mt. Moiwa, a popular spot for its night views! How about a leisurely ride on the streetcar?

2-6 Ropeway entrance and Mt. Moiwa

And the biggest attraction along the streetcar line is Mt. Moiwa, a familiar sight to Hokkaido fans! Sapporo Streetcar

Sapporo was selected as one of Japan's "New Top Three Night View Cities" in October 2015. The night view from Mt. Moiwa, in particular, now boasts world-class beauty. Not only are the lights of downtown Sapporo visible, but the lights of the entire Ishikari Plain stretch out, creating a fantastical spectacle.

It's fascinating to think that a village with only a handful of inhabitants about 150 years ago has now become a bustling metropolis with glittering night views! There are several routes to the summit of Mt. Moiwa, but if you're using the tram, get off at "Ropeway Entrance."

The free shuttle bus stop for the Moiwa Mountain Ropeway is located about a 1-minute walk from the "Ropeway Entrance." Sapporo Streetcar

I hope to introduce you to the many unique shops on another occasion ♪ How about a relaxing train journey along a slightly retro railway line?Sapporo Streetcar
