Sarobetu Wetland

Natural Treasure, Sarobetu Wetland

Sarobetsu Wetland is in the Northern area of Hokkaido and is the area spanning 200 square kilometers along the coastline of Toyotomi city and Horonobe city.  The wetlands which seem to continue to the horizon as far as the eye can see, is a sight unique to Hokkaido.

The area is also known as the ‘’Treasure box of wild plants’’ featuring low, middle and high moor altitude flowers in the wetlands, mountainous flowers in the sand dune forest, and over 500 species of flowers along the coastline including Hemerocallis esculenta and Lilium pensylvanicum flowers.  These flowers can be viewed with Rishiri Island’s Mt. Rishiri in the background.  There are also many swamps such as Penke Swamp and Panke Swamp.

The ‘’Natural Flower Garden’’ is located in the middle of the wetlands and over 100 species of flowers can be seen from May through September.  The Sarobetu Wetland Center is located near the Natural Flower Garden and is themed, ‘’Symbiosis of humans and nature’’.  It introduces the nature, culture, history and regeneration efforts of the wetlands.  The Horonobe Visitor Center in the southern area of the wetlands features a wooden street which allows visitors to stroll from Naga-numa Swamp to Ko-numa Swamp, and to Panke Swamp.  Visitors can enjoy the vegetation and wetland birds from the wooden street.

Nearby is Yoyotomi Onsen Hot Spring which is known for its yellow water containing oil.  This hot spring has the reputation of being gentle on the skin and helpful for atopic dermatitis.
