Abashiri Drift Ice Sightseeing and Icebreaker Ship

Enjoy the winter of the Sea of Okhotsk

Drift ice can be seen in the frozen waters of the Sea of Okhotsk facing the northern area of Hokkaido Prefecture.  Drift ice can be seen every year from early February through early April but the season depends on the climate.

The Ryuhyosaihyosen (Icebreaker ships) operate in the Sea of Okhotsk and every year many tourists take the ships to see the drift ice.  There are two icebreaker ships, ‘’Ryuhyo Kanko Saihyosen Aurora’’ (Drift Ice Sightseeing Icebreaker Aurora) and ‘’ryuhyo Kanko Saihyosen Garinko II’’ (Drift Ice Sightseeing Icebreaker Garinko II).  In addition to drift ice, tourists can also see sea eagles, white-tailed sea eagles, and seals.

Drift Ice Sightseeing Icebreaker Aurora is a large ship with a capacity of 450 people.  The bow of the ship presses down on the ice plate and with its weight breaks the ice and advances forward.  Sightseeing season is from January 20 to April 5.  There are 4 cruises in January, 5 cruises each in February and March, and 2 cruises in April.  Boarding fees are 3,300 yen for adults and 1,650 yen for elementary school students.

Drift Ice Sightseeing Icebreaker Garinko II uses its Alkylene Median Screw on the bottom of the ship to crush the ice and move forward.  It is possible to go to the bow of the ship and see the incredible landscape as well as the breaking of the ice.  Sightseeing season is from January 20 through March 31 and there are 7 cruises daily.  Boarding fees are 3,000 yen per adult and 1,500 yen for elementary school students.
