What are the Cherry Trees lined on 20-Ken Road of Shizunai?

The 20-Ken Road of Shizunai is an avenue of cherry trees located in Shinhidaka-cho in Hokkaido Prefecture. The cherry trees have been designated as a Prefectural heritage site and are also in the top 100 cherry blossom viewing sites of Japan. The cherry trees are in full bloom in early May and there are festivals held every year to celebrate the season.

''20-Ken'' is the unit of length and in this case, illustrates that the road is 36 meters in width. The length of the road is more than 7 kilometers. The cherry trees were planted after the year 1916 and over 3000 trees, including Ezo cherry trees, were transplanted here from nearby mountains.

Access

By public transportation: From JR Hidaka Line Shizunai Station, take the Donan Bus toward Minoriya (20 minutes). Get off at the Sakuraokasho bus stop. It is a 15 minute walk from the bus stop. By car: Take the Hidaka Motorway to the ''Hidakamonbetsu IC'' interchange. Continue on the National Highway Dodo toward Shinhidaka-cho (40km).
