About Otatomari March

Otatomori Marsh is a small marsh located on Rishiri Island, which is north of Hokkaido. The marsh itself is located on the island’s southern part.

Rishiri Island is located at a high latitude of 45 degrees north which means that you can see mountain flowers and alpine plants growing at ground level that you would normally have to go over 2000m in altitude on Japan’s main island Honshu to see. This means that you can leisurely enjoy plants that you would have to climb all the way up Mt. Fuji in order to see, without all the effort involved in climbing the mountain.

On the island is the 1721m high mountain Mt. Rishiri, which is commonly called "Rishiri Fuji". There are numerous lakes and wetlands around the base of the mountain. Among these the most famous is Himenuma which is surrounded by a virgin forest consisting of spruce and fir trees, but Otatomori Marsh is also popular due to the fact that it is a bit brighter and has a more refreshing aura about it than Himenuma. There is an explosion crater at the bottom which has become peatlands and the area surrounding it has become wetlands.

From the marsh you can enjoy gazing at Mt. Rishiri which is perpetually covered in snow, and if you come to visit in July you can see the ezocanzo and iris flowers blooming. There is a walking path around the lake shore that takes roughly 30 minutes to travel around.

Access

Located at Hokkaido’s northernmost tip is Wakkanai Port from which you can take a ferry bound for Rishiri Island. The ferry trip is about 1 hour and 40 minutes, and the disembarkation port is Washidomari Port located on Rishiri Island. After you have arrived at Washidomari Port, you can take the Soya Bus "Kutsukata" line to the Numaura stop which will take you about 30 minutes.
