About the Rebun Town Historical Museum

The Rebun Town Historical Museum is a museum located on Hokkaido’s island of Rebun. Rebun is Japan’s northernmost inhabited island and this museum is dedicated to showcasing the natural bounty of the region and the artifacts that have been found here.

The permanent exhibitions start with the natural environment of the island. Rebun is commonly referred to as the "Floating Island of Flowers", and a particular characteristic of the island is that you can see flowers all over the island that you would normally have to climb up a tall mountain on the Japanese mainland in order to see. The museum has an exhibit that shows off the plants and wildlife of the island that have been designated as natural monuments.

The museum also shows off artifacts from the Jomon Period. The Jomon Period is one of the divisions of Japanese history; broadly speaking, it is comparable to the Stone Age. On Rebun there have been numerous items excavated from the Jomon period that were passed between generations.

The island’s population began to increase after the 1870s and there are numerous items on exhibit that show the lifestyle of people from that era, as well as an introduction of the island’s development. The primary industry of the island in the early 1900s was herring, and you can see fishing tools and photos from the early 1900s.

The museum is only open from May until October, and is usually closed on Mondays.

Access

From Wakkanai Port take a Heartland Ferry which will take you in about 2 hours to Kafuka Port on Rebun Island. Wakkanai Port itself is about 5 minutes away from JR Wakkanai Station. From Kafuka Port you want to take Hokkaido Route 40 north towards the Rebun Town Hall direction, and from the town hall it is about a 1 minute walk. The ferry departure and arrival times and total travel times can vary, and the number of ferries that run every day is limited, so you need to check the ferry schedule in advance.
