Former Sakurai Residence

What is the Former Sakurai Residence

The Former Sakurai Residence was donated in 1983 by the family of the late Ryozo Sakurai, one of Bibai’s frontier pioneers. The owner of this mansion, Mr. Sakurai, managed a farm and was the mayor of the town of Bibai. Ryozo’s son Shogo was the first mayor of the city of Bibai and the father and son are known for developing Bibai over two generations.

The interior Japanese style room was built in 1918 so while the interior is Japanese style, it is a very special building in which a Western style truss structure was used for the roof frame and it is valued as a precious example among Hokkaido buildings of the Taisho era. In 1992, it was named Bibai City Designated Cultural Property #6. Tonden soldiers’ residence (Hokkaido Designated Cultural Property) and Bibai Tonden soldiers’ armory, which were moved to the premises from a separate location, are also selected as Bibai City Designated Cultural Properties.
※ Tonden Soldier = soldier who doubles as a pioneer and security detail.

Also, donations of more than 2,000 items related to daily life, culture and documents that were preserved in the mansion were received at the same time and are preserved and exhibited at the Former Sakurai Residence and the Bibai City Folk Museum.
