Coal Mine Memorial Forest Park

What is the Coal Mine Memorial Forest Park

The Coal Mine Memorial Forest Pak is maintained as a park to memorialize the Mitsubishi Bibai Coal Mine facility site which is in the city of Bibai in Hokkaido. The Bibai Coal Mine, which produced more than 1 million tons of coal annually, boasted the top ranking as most productive in coal mining among the coal mines owned by Mitsubishi, but as energy was converted from coal to petroleum, it was closed in 1972.

Most of the buildings from that time have been removed but the mine shaft frame, coal pocket and other things that tell of the coal history are preserved. In November of 2007, the mine shaft frame and coal pocket were chosen to be designated as Modern Industrial Heritage by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Access
