What is the Former Tomei Station Building?

The Former Tomei Station Building is a railway station of the former Bibai Railway that was maintained to transport coal from coal mines that were once open in Bibai. All lines on this railway were discontinued in 1972 but the station building of Tomei Station remains. Besides the station building, the platform as well as the steam locomotives, which were actually used, are preserved and you can also peek inside the steam locomotives. Additionally, these steam locomotives are recognized as precious cultural assets related to the history of the city of Bibai and Hokkaido and in 1976, they were selected as Bibai City Designated Cultural Property #4.

Before, a cycling road was maintained on the railway line, but currently, to prevent accidents caused by the aging equipment, it cannot be used.

Access

15 minutes by car from Bibai Station.
