What is Bibai City Folk Museum

Bibai City Folk Museum is a facility which introduces the nature, industry, culture and lifestyle of the city of Bibai in Hokkaido. In addition to the permanent exhibit and temporary exhibition rooms, there are also experiential study rooms where you can learn by actually holding the materials, audio visual rooms where you can see videos, and so on.

Permanent Exhibit Rooms

In the permanent exhibit rooms, you can learn about Bibai’s history in each era.

(1) Bibai’s Nature and Ancient People

Display corner with taxidermy of the animals that lived in Bibai’s marshland in the Jomon Period and pottery and stoneware from the Minenobu archaeological site. Try to imagine the life of the Jomon people who lived in this primitive land.

(2) Towards Development

Display of documents from the era when the maintenance of railroads and roads advanced because of the development of the mining industry after the existence of coal in the Bibai region was uncovered in the survey by Takeshiro Matsuura, Lyman, and Toshiyoshi Takabatake. This is the beginning of Bibai’s development history.

(3) Development and Agriculture Growth

Corner introducing the history of the birth of Numagai Village in Meiji 23 (1890). You can see photographs of the Tonden soldiers who usually engaged in farming and cultivating new land but went to fight as soldiers when necessary, and replicas of the farming equipment used at the time.

(4) Replacing the development of coal mines

Display corner focused on Bibai’s coal mining. Photographs showing a glimpse of the history of coal mine workers and the state of coal mining are reproduced.

(5) Lifestyle, Culture, Economic History

Corner with displays of photographs and various items from the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras when coal mining flourished.

(6) Present and Future Outlook of Bibai

A corner introducing current industry of Bibai. Products manufactured in the city and photos of the production sites are displayed.

Hours of Operation and Fees

The museum is open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Last admittance is at 4:30 pm. In addition to every Monday and Tuesday, the museum is closed for the winter from November 1st until April 30th. Admission is 50 yen per person for elementary and junior high school students and 200 yen per person for everyone else.
