Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery

What is the Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery ?

Yoichi is the birthplace of Japan's Nikka Whisky. Referred to as Japan's Scotland, Yoichi Distillery uses traditional techniques unchanged from their inception and keeps their passion for whisky making and produces a heavy malt even today. Visitors can tour the factory and there is also a whisky museum.

Nikka Whisky has two distilleries in Japan and Yoichi is one of them. The founder, Taketsuru Masataka searched all over Japan for a climate similar to Scotland. In Yoichi, west of Otaru and at the base of Shakotan-hanto peninsula, he found a cool, wet climate, a rich source of water and clear air. Whisky making in Yoichi began in 1936 and the pot stills (distillation stills) from that time still remain.

Enjoy the Factory Tour

In the factory tour, visitors can learn the process of preparation and distillation of whisky and see the old distillation stills as well as the storage area built at the time of the founding of the facility. In addition, there is a restaurant called Taru (Barrel) as well as a direct sales office where factory limited malt whisky can be purchased.

There is no reservation needed for the factory tour for groups less than 10 people. For a guided tour by an usher, signups are available at the reception desk. The guided tours begin on the hour and half hour. Please note there is no tour at 12:30PM., and the last tour begins at 3:30PM. Visitors can also do a self-guided tour using a guide map (9:00AM to 5:00PM). For groups of 10 or more people, reservations are required in advance. The tours include a free whisky tasting at the end.

Take the JR from Otaru Station to Yoichi Station (approximately 30 minutes). 2-3 minute walk from the Yoichi Station. Please note that the frequency of trains between these two stations is very few per day. Alternately, there is a bus going from the "Otaru Station" stop to the "Yoichi-eki-mae" stop that runs every 10-20 minutes. It will be a 35 minute ride between these stops.
