The Otokoyama Sake Museum is a museum that introduces visitors to the history and culture of sake brewing in Asahikawa City. In addition to the sake thee is also valuable materials and literature from the Edo period such as Ukiyo-e wood block printings.

The brand Otokoyama was established about 300 years ago in Osaka and was presented to the shoguns of the Edo period and was commonly used in kabuki performances and thus it became a famous sake brand. As other distilleries grew in popularity, the Otokoyama brand was driven out of business temporarily, but as revived by Yamazaki Distillery in Asahikawa in 1899. The Otokoyama brand is known throughout the world at present and has won gold medals and competitions for 38 consecutive years.

In the museum there is an exhibition hall for the old brewing equipment, a reference room for the Edo era, and an ukiyo-e exhibition corner. There is a sales office on site and they stock limited edition items you won’t find anywhere else.

Access

From in front of Asahikawa Station (旭川駅) or the 1-jo 8-chome bus stop take a bus to Nagayama 2 6 (永山2の6). From the bus stop it’s 2 minutes. If you’re renting a car, it’s 6km from Asahikawa Station (about 15min), and if you’re going from Asahikawa Airport it is 19km (about 40min).
