Soun-Kyo

The Soun-Kyo is located at the foot of the famous Hokkaido mountain Daitetsuzan and is a beautiful valley, one of the best scenic spots in the area. There are a wide variety of different cliff formations in the valley such as Daihako, Kobako, Meteor Falls, and the Galaxy Waterfall. Nearby is one of Hokkaido’s largest spa towns.

Daihako and Kobako are called in the Ainu language by words that mean "a place where the steep cliffs cut in on both sides "When you’re heading to the gorge from the spa town nearby, the first thing you see is the Meteor Falls, then Galaxy Waterfall, and then Kobako and finally Daihako.  The terrain was formed in an eruption from Daitetsuzan almost 30,000 years ago and the erosion formed rivers and cliffs as high as 200m in certain areas. The valley is especially beautiful in mid-September when the autumn leaves bloom and many tourists come from all around.

The nearby hot springs in the valley are said to have been discovered in 1857 when development of Hokkaido was advancing, there are 30 origin points and it is estimated 3 million guests per year come to enjoy them. There are large hotels and Japan-style inns available, as well as western style bathhouses and unlike other spa towns it exudes a Western-style atmosphere.

Every year there is the Soun-Kyo Kyohobaku Festival from mid-January to March, where ice sculptures are lit up, including ice shrines. Fireworks light up the night sky on weekends, and many tourists from both Japan and around the world come here to experience a fantastic wintery world.
