Blue pond in Biei

Introduction

In the hilly country of Biei, due to the blessings of the Tokachidake mountain range there are many mysterious and fascinating places, and the Biei blue pond is one of them. After an eruption in 1988, a pond was constructed to help deal with volcanic sand erosion, and when water from the river began to accumulate there something interesting happened by chance. Initially, entrance was prohibited, but in 2010 it was opened to the public and it has become a very popular tourist sight.

The blue color comes from the aluminum in the water from the nearby hot springs which reflects the color of the blue sky, and the sulfur and lime have turned the pond bed white, which further complements the blue water.

Images of the site became popular as PC wallpapers in PCs made by manufacturers some years ago, and the name recognition of the site went sky high worldwide. Many tourists come to see it, and during the summer season it is very crowded with very little parking available, so you want to make sure you have enough time to secure a spot to see it. There are tours available from the spring thaw until snow in November, and tours are closed during the winter.

There are many tourist spots around the blue pond, such as the Shirohige Falls, the refreshing Shirakaba Kaidou (Birch Road), and the beautiful panorama of Tokachidake mountains from the Tokachidake observatory. There is also a nearby Japanese bath, the Shirogane Onsen where you can enjoy lodgings and bathing.

Access

Use a bus from JR Asahikawa Station (旭川駅) to Shirogane Onsen and get off at the Shirogane-Aoi Ike Entrance stop. (白金青い池入口) which is about an hour and 10 minutes from Asahikawa, and it's a 5 minute walk from the bus stop.
