1. Sightseeing

1-1. Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery

Yoichi sightseeing imageSince you've come to Yoichi, you absolutely must visit the Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery. And your expectations will certainly not be disappointed.

Yoichi sightseeing imageIts official name is Nikka Whisky Hokkaido Factory Yoichi Distillery. It was established in 1934, in the early Showa era. The factory was born in a region blessed with high-quality water and a climate and environment similar to that of England, the home of whisky. Even today, it accounts for one-third of Hokkaido's industrial production and can be considered a pioneer of the food industry.

Yoichi sightseeing imageThe building has a charming stone exterior. After taking a leisurely look around, we proceeded to the factory tour. In the early Showa era, when the sound of marching boots was growing louder and the country was not yet prosperous, the passion of the founder, Masataka Taketsuru, also known as "Massan," who was determined to uphold quality above all else, seems to still be alive in the factory today.

Yoichi sightseeing imageWhile you can explore on your own, it's recommended to sign up for a guided tour. You'll receive detailed and thorough explanations of things you might miss if you just wander around.

Nikka ImageFinally, there will be tastings of whiskey, juice, and other beverages. Nikka remains a popular brand in Hokkaido, with many dry whiskey lovers still specifically requesting it. As for the taste, it's a smooth liquid that dances in your throat with a vivid yet rich aroma. You'll feel the genuine spirit of "Massan" still alive in it, something that continues to captivate the people of Hokkaido.

After your factory tour, we recommend taking a stroll along "Rita's Walking Path," also known as Rita Road. The scenery along the Yoichi River, which was beloved by Mr. Taketsuru's wife Rita, and the promenade made of Scottish bricks, will make you feel refreshed by the cool Hokkaido breeze after enjoying some fine whiskey.

The Fugoppe archaeological site was discovered in 1950 by junior high school students in Sapporo. It is believed to be a site dating back 1500 to 2000 years. It contains over 200 carvings, and similar carvings have not been found anywhere else except in Temiya, Otaru City. It is a truly unique archaeological site in Japan.

Yoichi sightseeing imageBefore we move on from the Edo and Meiji periods to the future of Hokkaido, let's take a look at the current natural landscape of Yoichi. This is Candle Rock.

Yoichi Town is located at the entrance to the Shakotan Peninsula from Sapporo and Otaru, and the Shakotan Peninsula boasts a beautiful coastline with a series of uniquely shaped rocks. Naturally, Yoichi also has such a beautiful coastline.

Passing through Hamanaka, a beach that attracts many swimmers in the summer, we head towards Shakotan. Soon we come across Candle Rock, said to be 46 meters tall.

Yoichi sightseeing imageThe colossal rock formation, standing alone amidst the deep blue of the ocean and rising towards the pale blue of the sky, is both majestic and awe-inspiring, yet also ephemeral. It captivates the hearts of travelers, leaving them speechless for a moment. 2. Gourmet Edition

2-1. Kakizaki Shoten Seafood Workshop

Kakizaki Shoten Kaisen Kobo is well-known among locals for its excellent value for money. It is located on the second floor of Kakizaki Shoten, a seafood retailer.

Located in front of Yoichi Station and within walking distance of the Nikka Whisky factory, it's a popular spot for customers to stop by on their way home. Yoichi is a town known to all Hokkaido residents for its fishing and fruit production, so it's no surprise that the seafood, including sea urchin and salmon roe, is delicious.

Yoichi sightseeing image(Image is for illustrative purposes only)

Set meals featuring mackerel and other fish dishes start at an unbelievably low price of just 500 yen. The taste and portion sizes are excellent, making you wonder if they're even making a profit. Popular menu items include seafood bowls and sea urchin bowls. These are also incredibly fresh, as you'd expect from a restaurant directly run by a fish shop.

Outside of the ports on the Shakotan Peninsula, alum is often used to preserve sea urchins, but this slightly diminishes their flavor. This is the real deal. Enjoy the fresh and flavorful sea urchins to your heart's content. This restaurant is kind to your heart, your palate, and your wallet. It will be a moment when you feel the generosity of the town of Yoichi.

2-2. Fruit Planet

Yoichi sightseeing imageThe history of fruit cultivation in Yoichi is equivalent to the history of fruit cultivation in Hokkaido.

In the early Meiji era, Yoichi was the first place in Hokkaido where private individuals successfully cultivated apples. Later, Nikka Whisky began producing and selling juice made from the superior apples grown in Yoichi. With such a rich history, one should definitely savor the fresh and flavorful bounty of the land when visiting Yoichi.

In that case, Fruit Planet, run by a strawberry farmer, is the perfect choice. It's a nationally popular shop that even has a booth at Hokkaido product fairs in department stores in Tokyo. You can enjoy freshly picked berries grown on their own farm, served in chewy crepes made with wheat also produced in Hokkaido.

Yoichi sightseeing imageThe tartness and sweetness that spread in your mouth, along with the rich aroma of three kinds of berries, are truly enhanced by being served in a warm crepe. This is a masterpiece that we hope you will enjoy in the crisp, clean air of Hokkaido.

Another recommendation is a smoothie. Made with plenty of fruit, its pure flavor is sure to enhance your tea time during your trip.
