 Arishima Takeo Memorial Museum

What is Arishima Takeo Memorial Museum?

Arishima Takeo Memorial Museum contains and displays a lot of information about a litterateur Arishima Takeo. He released a large farm inherited form his parents free of charge to the peasants. The beginning of this Memorial Museum is to reward a favor to Arishima Takeo from the employees before the farm released. People came to live in Niseko-chou around 1894, it was called Kaributo back then. In 1897, free loans and free grant of the wilderness owned by the country began. The father of Arishima Takeo, Arishima Takeshi received a loan of land, so the Arishima farm which employed around 70 peasant’s family in a size of 450 hectare has been built.  Takeo became firm in his intention of releasing the farm, as he was so sad about the miserable life of the peasants. In 1922, after his father’s death, he declared that he released the farm at no charge in order to share it with all the peasants. In 1924, the farm was guided by the spirit of "mutual aid", established by the union. 1922 which is when Arishima Takeo released the farm is also the year of his own death. He committed suicide because of the love of his life.

Arishima Takeo Memorial Museum is closed every Monday except from May to September. From October to April, it is closed on the next day if Monday is a public holiday. It is also closed on the New Year and New Year’s Eve.
