Ginsendai

What is Ginsendai?

Ginsendai refers to the trailhead area of Mt. Akadake, which is part of the Daisetsuzan volcanic mountain range located in the center of Hokkaido. Ginsendai is at an altitude of 1500 meters and is a well-known spot for fall foliage viewing. The trek to the trailhead of Mt. Akadake takes approximately 3 hours. In the fall, there are vehicle traffic restrictions, however, there is a shuttle bus available.

In addition to the fall foliage, visitors can enjoy early summer snow, the refreshing air of the plateau in the summer, and various alpine plants. The roads are closed during the heavy snowfall of winter and the area cannot be accessed, even by vehicles.

There is a shuttle bus that operates from Sounkyo, which is famous for its nature and hot springs.

Access

From JR Asahikawa Station, Ginsendai is a 2 hour 30 minute drive (80km) along National Highway 273 and Hokkaido Dodo Road 1162. From JR Kawakami Station, it is a 30 minute bus ride to Sounkyo Onsen hot spring. From Sounkyo, it is a 40 minutes by car or shuttle bus.
