Mt.Asahi-dake

What is Mt. Asahi-dake?

Asahi-dake is Hokkaido’s highest mountain peak. It is part of the Daisetsu-san volcanic mountain range. The area west of the peak is shaped like a horseshoe and fumaroles are scattered in the Jigokudani (Hell Valley) crater. In the lower end of the valley, there is the ‘’Sugatami-no-ike’’ Pond. Sugatami in Japanese means full-length mirror and as the name states, the water’s surface acts as a mirror and it is possible to see a beautiful reflection of the mountain in the pond.

Though the altitude of Asahi-dake is 2290 meters, from early summer through the summer season, it is possible to see plants that can ordinarily only be seen at altitudes of 3000 meters. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful fall foliage as well as rime in the winter.  There is even a beginner-level trekking course available for people who do not have climbing experience. Please be sure to take clothes and equipment appropriate for the season.

Access

By public transportation: The ‘’Ideyu-go’’ Bus is a convenient way to get to the area and runs from JR Asahikawa Station to Asahi-dake and from Asahikawa Airport to Asahi-dake. There are 3 round-trip busses per day and no reservations are required.

By car:  Mt. Asahi-dake is a 1-hour drive from Asahikawa Station or a 50-minute drive from Asahikawa Airport.  When using the Hokkaido Expressway (Do-o Jidosha-do), exit the ‘’Asahikawa Takasu IC’’ or the ‘’Asahikawa Kita IC’’ interchanges.
