What is Unimuki Experience Center?

Rebun Island is Japan’s northernmost island located where the two ocean currents, Tsushima current and Riman current collide. Due to the collision of currents, the area produces high-quality kelp and sea urchin that feed on the kelp.

During the sea urchin season, it is possible to peel your own sea urchin and eat this high-quality sea urchin at the Unimuki (Sea urchin peel) Experience Center. It is an indoor facility so visitors can enjoy this activity regardless of weather. Staff members are available to show visitors how to peel sea urchin and even first-timers can enjoy this activity that can only be experienced here.

It is one of very few places where this high-quality sea urchin can be caught, peeled and eaten on the spot. The fee is straightforward and is based on the number of sea urchin consumed. The facility is open from spring through fall.

Access

Unimuki Experience Center is accessible by rental car or rental bike.  It is a 15 to 30 minute ride from Kafuka Ferry Terminal. Look for the Unimuki Experience Center sign.

Although it is possible to take a bus toward Sukotonmisaki from Kafuka Ferry Terminal, it does not stop near the Unimuki Experience Center.  A tour bus is instead recommended.
