Shakotan Peninsula Sightseeing Cruise

Shakotan Peninsula Sightseeing Cruise

From these sightseeing cruises with glass bottoms you can enjoy both the coasts and rock formations of the Shakotan Peninsula while simultaneously enjoying the fish and sea urchins so close you could touch them. The Shakotan Peninsula projects out of the western part of Hokkaido and this area has been specified as an underwater park. The water is extremely clear and full of life, and is called the "Shakotan Blue". The bottom of the boats are glass so you can watch the underwater life without any special equipment and so everybody can enjoy the sea for the 40 minute ride.

The ship holds 78 people. It runs from late April to late October and sails every day. If you take a short walk from the boat location Biku-nikou there is a promontory which is among the most popular places in Shakotan, "Cape Kamui" which is just a 20 minute walk from the parking lot, where you can see a huge panorama of the Sea of Japan. There are many hot springs in the vicinity and you can enjoy a rustic hot spring experience.

Access

Sapporo city offers a "High-speed Shakotan" bus route there, and it takes about 2 hours and 10 minutes. Otaru also has a bus that heads there, about 1h10m. The JR sells discount bundle tickets of a roundtrip bus ticket and Shakotan cruise from Otaru Station (小樽駅). There are also regular tourist buses such as the "Scenic Shakotan Route" line.
