Daisetsuzan National Park

Introduction

The 2000m-class Taisetsu Mountain range is often referred to by the Ainu people as Kamui Mintara", or the Garden of the Gods, as it is a beautiful mountain range covered in snow with truly majestic landscapes to gaze upon. The main peak Asahidake is Hokkaido's highest peak, and the 230,000 hectare area around Asahidake is designated as a national park. Snow remains in the valleys in the midsummer, and because of the high altitude and high latitude, there are over 360 varieties of alpine plant growing here.

There are plenty of animals in the park as well, such as brown bears, foxes, sika deer, and others, representing 90% of the 23 species of ground mammal in Hokkaido. The birds are designated as a national treasure including black woodpeckers and Blakiston's fish-owl among 140 other species.

There is a cable car that will take you past the forest limit up to the 1600m point on the highest peak Asahidake, and at the final point Sugatamie-eki there is a 1 hour sightseeing path you can take that runs about 1.7km. On the path is Sugataminoike where you can see water accumulated in the volcano opening as well as many rare alpine plants growing in the wetlands.

Because the national park is a volcanic zone there are also numerous hot springs, including the Sounkyo Onsen in the park, the Asahidake Onsen, Tenninkyo, Tokachidake, and Tomaraushi.

There is also the Kurodake area of the mountain range at an altitude of 1984m that you can ride up 7/10ths the way to about the 1700m point. This area is also known as Shuho , and throughout spring and summer the alpine plants bloom here, in fall there is beautiful foliage on the leaves here, and during winter you can go skiing and snowboarding, so you can enjoy Kurodake throughout the year. There is a 1950 fee for adults and 550 for children. To ride up to the 7/10th point during summer it is 600 yen for adults and 400 yen for children.

On the southeast end of the national park is the Shikaribetsu Lake at 800m altitude, this lake can be enjoyed in fall for its beautiful autumn colors or during winter when it freezes over for various activities.

Access

It is located virtually in the center of Hokkaido, so if you are headed for Sounkyo or Asahidake the nearest s Asahikawa Airport. There are lodgings in the Sounkyo area including a large hotel at the foot of Asahidake. The Obihiro Airport is the closest to Shikaribetsu Lake. You can access it by both rail and high speed buses from the New Chitose Airport.
