Hokusei-no-oka Observatory Park

Introduction

Hokusei-no-oka Observatory park is located approximately in the center of Hokkaido in Biei. Lavender and sunflowers have been planted here, and you can use the pyramid-shaped observatory to enjoy the colorful views. It is commonly used in TV shows and commercials, and it is a popular spot for observing the sunset. Additionally you can also overlook the vast hilly landscape of the Taisetsu mountain range and savor the feeling of Hokkaido. There is a tourism office and a glass workshop in the park, as well as shops where handmade goods, refreshments and Biei souvenirs are sold.

There are many attractions in the vicinity of the park as well such as the Patchwork Road which is reminiscent of the European countryside, as well as the Ken and Mary Tree which was used in a famous car advertisement in 1972, as well as the La Giruranda Museum which displays trick art.

Please note that the park is only open from May to October; during the winter it is closed.

Access

From the JR Biei Station (美瑛駅) it is 5 minutes by taxi. The nearest airport is Asahikawa Airport and you can reach the park in about 15min by car. To get to the JR Biei station, transfer to the Furano Line at Asahikawa Station (旭川駅) and from there it’s about 30min.
