Hagoromo Waterfall

What is Hagoromo Waterfall (Angel's Robe Falls)

Hagoromo Waterfall (Angel's Robe Falls) is a waterfall of 270 meters and is located near Tenninkyo Onsen (Hot springs). The cliffs are divided into 7 stages and it is the largest waterfall in Hokkaido, the second largest in Japan (after Toyama Prefecture’s Tateyama Renpo’s Shomyodaki Waterfall, 350 meters). In 1990, it was selected into Japan’s "Top 100 Waterfalls" list.

The waterfall was discovered in 1870 and in 1918, a literary artist, Oomachi Keigetsu, upon visiting it, noticed that the beauty of the landscape and water flow was reminiscent of a Hagoromo (Robe of an angel) and so it was named "Hagoromo Waterfall" or "Angel’s Robe Falls".

It is in walking distance to Tenninkyo Onsen and a 15-20 minute walk (3km) from the hot springs town, there is an observation deck. From the observation deck, Hagoromo Waterfall can be seen, as well as Shikishima-no Taki Waterfall, also known as the "Niagara of the East". In April when the snow melts, the water flow increases and provides for a very active waterfall. During fall foliage, the entire mountain is a beautiful scene.

Please note, due to a large landslide that occurred in the winter of 2013, the promenade going to the observation deck is closed (information as of November 2014).

Access

The closest airport is Asahikawa Airport. From the airport, or JR Ashikawa Station, take the bus and get off at Tenninkyo Onsen. From the Onsen hot springs town, it is a 15 to 20 minute walk.
